The benchmark for suburban horror in the 2010s began with 2013's The Purge, the success of which kicked off a multi-film and television series franchise.

Featuring a dystopian reality in which all crime is legal for a 12 hour period with absolutely zero repercussions, the events depicted within the barbaric universe centre on the Sandin family within their secured suburban home.

The family are targeted when their youngest son Charlie allows an unidentified stranger into the house during Purge hours; the stranger is pursued by a gang of psychopathic masked killers and accordingly the unfortunate Sandins are forced into a desperate defense of their home.

The Purge is an intelligent, thought invoking horror that highlights the visceral resentment between the class divide within society; combining thrilling nerve wracking sequences with cutting social commentary, the film is an iconic installment within the horror genre.

The setting of the suburbs arguably make The Purge infinitely more terrifying as it makes the subject matter considerably more relatable. Horror films are typically a lot scarier when they invoke the concept of your neighbors invading your house to murder you if they had a blank legal slate to do so.

Maybe say something extra nice to your neighbors next time you're taking the bins out.
