If you ever require a case study in dread soaked suspense, this writer would implore you to give 2014's It Follows a watch.

The film recounts the tale of a supernatural entity that is passed from one individual to another by sexual intercourse; the entity will then unfalteringly follow the unfortunate individual at a walking pace. Oh, and by the way, if it catches up with you, it will murder you in almost comically brutal fashion; the first unfortunate victim resembles a rabbit run over by an 18-wheeler. Unfortunate suburb resident Jaime "Jay" Height, is the latest recipient of the unenviable curse.

It Follows is one of the most critically acclaimed horror films of all time for a reason; this is a genuinely great film, utterly un-reliant on genre cliches like jump scares and demonic voices. The notable originality of the film's premise coupled with phenomenal direction and superbly engrossed performances resulted in a horror film with an almost unheard of 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This film particularly stands out amongst various suburban horrors as it does an exemplary job of using a typically peaceful setting while still managing to infuse the environment with an atmosphere of sheer terror. The film also provides a seriously introspective look at sex in general; the symbolic interpretations of a horrific entity passed on by sex are almost endless.
