10 Best Superhero Movie Theme Songs
7. Wonder Woman - Rupert Gregson-Williams
Though the riff made its debut in Hans Zimmer & Junkie XL's score for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it was in Wonder Woman's solo film and Ruper Gregson-Williams' respective score that her theme song fully came into shape. Many still recall the theme to the 1970s Lynda Carter series with fondness, but this new interpretation of the character needed a modern, more badass touch, and the final results are truly (pun intended) wonderful.
All you have to hear are those pounding drums and that electric cello riff, and you know Wonder Woman is about to do something awesome. It almost feels like the marching music of an ancient army, which perfectly fits in with the film's World War I setting. As Diana fights her way through German soldiers and tanks with this majestic music playing behind her, it's hard not to get caught up in the moment.
But it's what Gregson-Williams adds to the theme started by Zimmer and XL that not only better adapts it to the new film, but gives it a greater sense of heroism. The original version from BvS, titled "Is She With You?", feels a lot darker and murkier; it fits Zack Snyder's aesthetics, but it wouldn't have felt right in Patty Jenkins' film. Gregson-Williams' version gives it more of an old-fashioned, valorous edge, especially when it shifts out of the drums and cello and into more of a traditional heroic fanfare, which in the end better suits Wonder Woman as a character in general.
