10 Best Superhero Movie Theme Songs
5. Batman Begins - Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard
Batman already had some great film scores thanks to the likes of Danny Elfman and Elliot Goldenthal, but for Christopher Nolan's reinterpretation of the Caped Crusader, a new tone needed to set in every category. Batman needed to feel scary and menacing again, but without losing that heroic edge. And so once again, Hans Zimmer's name appears on this list for his collaboration with James Newton Howard on the score to Batman Begins.
The theme to Batman Begins, entitled "Mollosus" after the genus of bat (fun fact: all tracks on the soundtrack are named after bats), is a dark and haunting piece of music. For a movie with the central theme of fear, it certainly incites a certain feeling of dread, but also of something noble and larger than life.
The atmosphere it creates fits the gritty tone Nolan established for his trilogy perfectly, forming the basis for the scores to both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, and crafting a new Batman theme for the modern age. For many, this is now the definitive Batman music, and that very much includes Zimmer himself. Though he worked on the score to Batman v Superman, he let co-composer Junkie XL handle all of the Batman music for fear of having to top himself, before then retiring from superhero scores all together. I think that more than anything sums up what this theme means to some people.
