What are some of the most chilling supernatural horror films of the 2010s?

Horror is a very open genre. It is often an auteur led field that can veer into thousands of different directions. There are horror films based on real-life crimes, alien invasions, satanic cults... but what it often comes down to is the supernatural.

Supernatural can be a broad term, but it mostly relates to ghosts, demons and the paranormal. These ideas have been the basis for almost every horror classic you can think of. The Exorcist, The Shining and Poltergeist just to name a few.

It’s safe to say that the genre has had issues throughout the 2010s, though. The "found-footage" craze raged through the early 2010s as well as strange horror remakes that just didn't quite hit the mark. However, there have also been some all-time classics.

We have been blessed with some terrific Stephen King adaptations and have also seen some incredible new directors emerge with some outstanding indie horror films. It's worth noting that A24 really helped push indie horror into the mainstream during the late 2010s.

From Gothic horror all the way to Fourth Wall breaking comedy, there have been some incredibly entertaining and chilling flicks throughout the 2010s.

10. Oculus

Oculus Ghost
Blumhouse Productions

Before he was bringing horror to Netflix with The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan released this underrated gem on the big screen. Based on one of his previous short films, Oculus focuses on two different time periods, but everything revolves around the same haunting.

Starring Karen Gillan as the lead, the former Amy Pond delivers a solid performance in the film. Her chemistry with her brothers is believable and manages to ground the feature. The sequences that take place in the past are the meaty horror aspects that audiences know Flanagan for. His shooting style allows for some great moments of dread and threat.

Oculus features an intriguing story, all revolving around a cursed mirror and the death of the lead’s parents. Looking back on the film, it is easy to see how Flanagan created Hill House and Bly Manor. This was where he developed his storytelling skills, and he did it masterfully. Oculus is a gem that you should not sleep on.
