10 Best Sword Fights In Movies

8. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a masterpiece of Asian cinema and brought Ang Lee into the Western mainstream. While we probably could have done without his Eric Bana led Hulk movie, we’re certainly richer for Brokeback Mountain and Life Of Pi’s existence.

The attention to detail often noted about Lee is a huge part of what makes Crouching Tiger so mesmerising. When Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi take each other on, everything feels measured and precise.

Possibly the most welcome part of this is the clear anger on both sides. These characters are trying to hurt each other. They aren’t concerned with flashy movements, fancy footwork or fast weaving. Yes, we see elements of all that, but only because the women are incredibly skilled.

There’s nothing deliberately cinematic here. No music, no showboating. Adventures Of Robin Hood came in for some praise for its exciting drama, but when realism is done right it really elevates a scene.

The range of weaponry used is a testament not only to ancient samurai warfare but also to Asian cinema in general. The overhead shots, too, are crucial to showing the craft in this scene. A truly great fight all around.
