10 Best Times The Lord Of The Rings Appeared In Other Movies
6. The Martian (2015)
Matt Damon sci-fi survival flick The Martian was praised for its exciting and accurate (for the most part) depiction of space travel, and the way in which someone could hypothetically survive on Mars.
Although for the most part the movie was praised for sticking to the science, it wasn't without its criticisms. The main one being a central plot point could never happen. Damon's character is left for dead after his crew are bombarded by severe winds on the surface of Mars. Although dust storms on Mars do get up to impressive speeds, they wouldn't have the power to cause the kind of carnage that sets up the movies entire plot. Nevertheless, if you can suspend disbelief for that one moment, the rest of the movie is an enjoyable space-survival/rescue flick.
For a fairly serious movie, it isn't without it humorous parts and it even includes the odd inside joke. Sean Bean - better known to Lord of the Rings fans as Boromir - plays Mitch Henderson, the flight director of the Mars mission. While trying to come up with a plan to rescue Damon's character, a secretive meeting is called to discuss the task at hand. It's given the title "Project Elrond", and Bean then has to explain this is a reference to the secret meeting held by Elrond to discuss what course to take concerning the Ring.
