10 Best Vampire Movies Of The 2000s
3. Underworld (2003)
In a world where vampires and lycans have been at war for generations, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire "Death Dealer" ordered by her clan to hunt and kill their lycan adversaries, finds herself with a difficult mission: protect human doctor Michael (Scott Speedman) from the lycans who are for some reason after him.
With a meticulous vampire-werewolf history running throughout the plot, Underworld has moments where the main cast fall a touch flat, but thanks to some seriously stylish action sequences and a brilliant remix of the vampire/werewolf genre, it's one of the most daring and successful high concept vampire flicks out there.
The rest of the franchise is a bit hit-or-miss, with the latest instalment, 2016's The Blood Wars, probably being the next best movie of the series.
Despite the future this film created being a step too far for most critics and movie-goers, Underworld remains a fresh, uber-violent and thoroughly thought-out action-horror which keeps itself clear of supernatural stereotypes and perfectly brings all audiences know and love about vampires (and werewolves) into the modern world.
