10 Best Vampire Movies Of The 2020s So Far
8. El Conde (2023)
From Pablo Larrain, a director known for his deep dramatic character studies of famous figures (Jackie, Spencer, Maria), comes a vampire movie with a twist - or several, actually. Charting the life, rise and fall of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, El Conde (translation: "the count") is a humorous post mortem of not just the man but the entire regime, told through the frame of an upper class family comi-drama.
Oh, and Pinochet is not only not dead but eternally so.
In his after-afterlife, the former titan is now an infirm old man who has lost his lust for life and wishes nothing more than to waste away to his death. But when his spoiled children come to visit, they reignite something in him as they conduct an audit on his life and finances, in consultation with an accountant nun who harbours an ulterior motive.
Even with a deliberate pace and droll sense of humour that might not land with typical vampire movie fans, El Conde is worth it just to see the count swooping like a bat, in full military regalia, over the hills, lakes and modern cities of Chile. Plus there's a bonkers character reveal late in the movie that, despite plenty of forewarning, is still a side-splitting shock - closely followed by an even wilder twist.
