10 Best Vampire Movies Of The 2020s So Far
4. Blood Red Sky (2021)
A true hidden gem from this decade's crop of bloodsucker celluloid, Peter Thorwarth's action horror Blood Red Sky goes where no vampire movie has dared before - a transatlantic flight from Germany to New York.
The flight in question sees Nadja (Peri Baumeister) and her son thwarted in their attempts to get her to a special clinic that might be able to cure her cancer-like ailments. Presented in dual strands, reaching into past and future simultaneously, the film gradually unspools its mysteries as we discover Nadja is a vampire, how she came to be that way, and what the group of sinister-looking men with guns have planned for her ill-fated flight.
And yet, despite being tense, exciting and truly original, hardly anyone has seen it. Why? Well, Netflix have a lot to answer for. Sure, "Snakes On A Plane but vampires" is a good elevator pitch, but it's not enough to sell a movie on, let alone do this movie justice, and it has brought in the wrong viewers. Blood Red Sky is not a slow burn, but also not one for the modern blockbuster devotees, who need an explosion every two minutes just to stay awake. Audiences unable or unwilling to sit tight, strap in and turn all other devices off won't have a good time, but anyone with a hankering for a whole new kind of vampire horror is in for a treat.
