10 Best Vampire Movies Of The 2020s So Far

5. Renfield (2023)

Renfield Nicolas Cage
Universal

Nicolas Cage had been waiting his whole acting career to play the Count, we had been waiting just as long to see it, and two years ago he finally got the opportunity, laying down an exquisitely over the top performance in Chris McKay's Renfield.

Now, don't get us wrong, Renfield is very much the title character's film, and follows Dracula's infamous underling (played by Nicholas Hoult) as he reckons with over a century of serving a master and getting little back. At the end of his tether emotionally and existentially, he goes on a self-help journey, joins a support group and tries to put himself out there, finding some "me time" away from "work".

However.

Dracula won't let his faithful servant slip from his grasp that easily, and is determined to seize control of Renfield once again any way he can. He crops up at increasingly inopportune moments throughout the movie, not just stealing but positively slaying every scene he appears in. It's funny, it's cute, it's downright horrific at times, and as far as contemporary vampire movies go, it's up there with the best. And it's just an added bonus that we are treated to the archetypal vamp in so many guises.
