10 Best War Films NOT About The US Military

3. Das Boot

Days of Glory
Columbia Pictures

Simply referred to as "The Boat" in English, Das Boot is an effort from director Wolfgang Peterson. This time it's all about the German U-boats that proved a massive thorn in the side of Allied naval campaigns, specifically one U-96 and its crew who made many patrols throughout the Second World War.

U-96 was launched in 1940 and went on to conduct eleven operations. In terms of effectiveness, this one submarine was massively successful, sustaining no crew casualties over five years and sinking more than twenty-five enemy ships. It was eventually bombed and destroyed by the US on the 30th of March, 1945.

This vessel plays host to another standout war story, one that focuses on the people within the machine, their camaraderie and commitment to the mission on full display. Through the excitement of embarkment right down to the tedium of an endless hunt, Das Boot is an engaging tale that humanises everyone who served aboard the U=96.

It's one of the most fondly remembered films to come out of Germany, transcending its historical events to become a true classic. Where it makes the biggest impact is its carefully crafted sets, which take you inside the U-boat for a claustrophobic
