10 Best Westerns NOT Set In The Old West
8. The Rover
The Rover is brilliant. For anyone still questioning Robert Pattinson's acting ability, look no further than this. As a whole, the plot of this film is very simple; a classic Western piece with some key details changed to make it more accessible to modern viewers. With this also comes two phenomenal performances - Pattinson and Guy Pearce - and some fantastic set pieces.
Set in the near future when lawlessness rules and civilisation has mostly crippled, a loner called Eric (Pearce) has his car stolen and sets out to get it back. Tagging along (though not too happy about it) is Rey (Pattinson), a wounded member of the gang who stole the vehicle. Pair this seriously dysfunctional duo with the landscape of the Australian Outback and a society with no rules, and what you've got is a film destined for greatness.
And great it is. The performances are the best part of the picture, with Pearce being convincingly broken and threatening as his journey progresses and Pattinson playing Rey with great dejection and hopelessness. But thanks to some stunning scenery, seamless direction from David Michod and a solid script marked by its originality from Michod and Joel Edgerton, The Rover is both the best that the genre has to offer and a tight and emotional psychological thriller focused on the greed and evil of man.
Yeah, it's pretty damn good.
