Post 2000, the turn of the millennium meant that the reliable thirty year nostalgia cycle ensured viewers were ready to return to the gritty brutality of seventies horror classics.

Scream-style ironic wit and meta-horror was out, savage and unsparingly cynical survival films were in (wonder if America at large was reeling from any massive war just like Vietnam in the seventies...).

Enter Wrong Turn, a franchise so successful it managed to produce five sequels in short order. This teen horror from 2003 reignited public interest in the wilderness horror sub genre with its simple "teens versus cannibals" plot.

Less viscerally brutal and more crowd pleasing than the likes of The Hills Have Eyes and Deliverance, this one features some superb kills, a tense and scary plot, and fantastic acting from the likes of Jeremy Sisto, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Eliza Dushku, all of whom give the over-the-top material real human weight and garner some real scares from a potentially cheesy premise.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
