10 Best 'Worst' Movies Of 2017 (So Far)

1. The Fate Of The Furious

XXX Return Of Xander Cage Vin Diesel
Universal

You know what to expect from a movie that opens with Vin Diesel winning a race driving backwards in a burning car, but even by the standards of a Fast & Furious sequel, Furious 8 goes out of its way to deliver some seriously silly fun.

The filmmakers seem to know what they’re doing, too, and serve everything up with their tongue firmly in their cheek, hence Oscar winner Charlize Theron playing a villain named “Cipher” and Oscar winner Helen Mirren turning up in a cameo as the mother of Jason Statham’s character.

Never mind the testosterone-soaked meeting of Statham, Vin Diesel, and Dwayne Johnson and forget about the sequence where cars are swatted aside by a wrecking ball with a smiley face, Mirren’s cameo is worth the price of admission by itself. Okay, so it’s curious how Statham’s character goes from incarcerated badass to a good guy who heroically saves a baby, but it doesn’t pay to analyse this kind of material too much.

This is not cinema for the ages but cinema for the here and now. One day, it’ll be as toxic as Rambo III (in 1988 the most expensive movie ever made, but who sings its praises today?) but right now audiences can’t get enough.
