10 Better Movies That Were Secretly Hidden In Films
6. Wenwu The Conqueror - Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings
Marvel Studios' recent Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a rock solid introduction to the title character (Simu Liu), but let's be honest, wasn't he totally overshadowed by his villainous father, Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung)?
This becomes apparent from the film's terrific prologue sequence which quickly chronicles Wenwu's past, where he discovers the mysterious ten rings that give him basically God-like powers and allow him to become an unrivalled conqueror throughout human history.
Though the prologue speeds through Wenwu's origin story, it's clear that there's a whole other movie's worth of material waiting to be exploited here, of a man who unstoppably exerted his will upon any land he set foot on.
Tie this into his later discovery of the mythical land of Ta Lo, his romance with Ying Li (Fala Chen), her murder, and his subsequent attempts to bring her back to life, and you've got one hell of a story without even mentioning his son.
It goes without saying that Tony Leung is more than up to the task of carrying an epic superhero movie on his own back, and as enjoyable as the movie we got was, this is a clear-cut case of the villain being so, so much more interesting than the hero.
