10 Big 2018 Movies You Should Be Worried About

3. The Nun

Reason To Be Worried: It will reduce the effectiveness of the titular character.

The Nun was a scarily effective addition to The Conjuring 2, just like Annabelle - everyone's least-favourite porcelain doll - was to The Conjuring.

But, unfortunately, Annabelle was overused and borderline ruined with the doll's 2014 spinoff movie, a scenario that could repeat itself when The Nun's own standalone story drops next year.

The reason both characters worked so well in the mainline Conjuring series is that they were used minimally. The Nun pops up intermittently throughout The Conjuring 2, a terrifying demonic entity that loomed over the film like a shadow, which only increased the intensity and scare-factor of the scenes in which it appeared.

But with this spinoff, that sense of mystery could be ruined. If we learn where The Nun came from and why it chooses to haunt people, then it won't be scary anymore. It'll just be, "oh look, there's that nun who died by choking on a slice of apple and decided to scare anyone who enjoys fruit".

We don't want to learn more about this character - it's just there, and that's why it's creepy - and we don't want it to be overused. Overuse generally equals less scares, and a horror movie that isn't scary is missing the mark entirely.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
