Spider-Man will kick off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Homecoming's 2019 sequel, a movie that will pick up immediately after Avengers 4.

Peter Parker is a solid choice as the vanguard for this brave new age. Not only is he Marvel's most iconic character, Tom Holland's first solo outing as the wall-crawler turned out far better than a second reboot in five years has any right to be.

Although Holland proved more than capable of carrying a solo film, Homecoming contained hints that Marvel has broader plans for its favourite son, perhaps even a sub-series of Spider movies set within MCU continuity.

Parker isn't the only character with arachnid superpowers in the world of Marvel, and Homecoming forged strong links with two others. Firstly, Donald Glover's Aaron Davis happens to be the uncle of another version of Spider-Man - Mile Morales - and he makes a clear reference to the Afro-Latino web-slinger in the movie. Then there's Cindy Moon, the character who begs Parker to attend the decathlon in Washington DC. She also gains spider abilities in the comics, and assumes the identity of Silk.

In 2014, Marvel brought every version of Spider-Man ever conceived together for the reality-jumping crossover Spider-Verse, and the results were epically chaotic. Now, a direct Spider-Verse adaptation could get messy, but the MCU could be planning to bring multiple Spider characters together for something of similar scale in Phase 4.
