10 Big Questions From Venom's New Trailer
9. Will Riz Ahmed Have Better Motivations?
Shortly after the trailer's opening, viewers get another glimpse of Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake, the predetermined "evil person" as Hardy's Brock so eloquently stated in the previous trailer.
Here, Drake gets to deliver a monologue that seems to state his motivations in the film;
"Look around at the world. What do you see? A planet on the brink of collapse. Human beings are disposable but man and symbiote combined? This is a new race, a new species. A higher life form."
This line reading again features some shockingly bad sound mixing, but more importantly, is this really the villain's motivations? The whole 'evil businessman who claims to want to save and enhance the human race through dangerous testing' thing has been done to death in the last few decades, especially in comic book movies.
Heck, those were Norman Osborne's exact motivations in Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man back in 2002. For a film whose marketing seems to suggest a bit of tongue-in-cheek awareness ('The World Has Enough Superheroes'), this trailer makes its characters and their motivations seem about as stale as they come.
Here's hoping that this is just what Carlton Drake says to impress people and his real motivations are a bit more interesting.
