8. Roger Ebert's Film Is Passed Over By The Film Community
In 2013, the world lost one of its most famous and beloved movie critics, Roger Ebert, to cancer. Life Itself is the well-received documentary detailing and honoring his life. It uses footage from the last few months of his life, intercut with interviews from other major figures in the entertainment world, as well as clips from his popular television show with Gene Siskel, who passed away in 1999. One might think that, given the film industry's proclivity for patting each other on the back, a heartfelt and poignant tribute to Roger Ebert would have been a shoo-in for at least a nomination in the Best Documentary Film category. Especially considering the fact that it's actually a genuinely good film. But surprisingly, it was overlooked. Everyone knew that Citizenfour was going to be nominated (and will probably end up winning the award), but some of the other choices seem somehow less deserving than Life Itself.
