10. Elysium
Budget: $115 million This was Neill Blomkamp's follow up to the great District 9, so expectations were high. Elysium is a sci-fi futuristic movie set in 2154 where only two types of people exist. The rich who live on Elysium and the poor that live in the slums of Earth. Visually the movie doesn't disappoint but it falls short in a lot of other areas. The film didn't take enough risks and wasn't as ambitious as it should've been. The main character Max (Mat Damon) ends up getting a lethal dose of radiation on Earth. With only 5 days to live, he chooses to take action for himself and the others like him. His quest was simple, go to Elysium and find a cure. Once on Elysium the movie becomes rather predictable. Shoot outs and action scenes begin to take over, taking away from the majestic views and the focus of the main story, thus making it fairly bland. Maybe we expected too much from Blompkamp after District 9. For me, the story fell flat and I began to lost interest in the characters. Or maybe, just maybe, the movie was diluted by it's high expectations. Either way, Elysium fell short of calling itself a blockbuster film.
