A sci-fi movie starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Eddie Redmayne directed by the people who brought the world The Matrix—it all sounds like a recipe for success. However, not even the film's impressive (and very expensive) visual effects could save it from its bonkers story of a cleaning woman on Earth learning she is space royalty.

Paired with a doglike character in Channing Tatum, and Eddie Redmayne's strange whispered performance as the villain, this two-hour space opera was trying too hard to be the next Star Wars from the outset—a lofty expectation to begin with.

With the odds stacked against the film from the beginning, both the reviews and the box office performance were low. With a $176 million budget plus an estimated $100 million marketing budget, it only managed to make around $183 million worldwide.

Total loss: $93 million
