Even before this movie was released, critics and moviegoers alike were predicting the failure of The Lone Ranger, if not for the somewhat unfamiliar leading man in Armie Hammer then most definitely for the questionable portrayal of a Native American by the caucasian Johnny Depp.

Once these factors paired with comparisons to previous reboot-Western box office flops such as Wild Wild West and a perpetually pushed back release date, the movie barely stood a chance come opening weekend.

When it finally did premiere, the film only made $86 million domestically—a paltry sum compared to its $375 million production and marketing budget. Though the film did find more success abroad and managed to make a world gross of around $260 million, it still wasn't enough to make up for the domestic performance.

Total loss: $115 million
