Coming down from his high as a bona fide rom com star in the early 2000s, Matthew McConaughey helmed the 2005 desert treasure-hunting adventure film Sahara, alongside Steve Zahn and Penelope Cruz.

Though the film didn't necessarily receive horrible reviews, the exorbitant production and marketing budget of $240 million dragged down the success of this popcorn flick, only grossing around $120 million worldwide.

Two years after its release, the Los Angeles Times even published a story detailing the movie's production and where all that cash was spent—including a $2 million plane crash stunt that didn't even make it into the final cut.

Total loss: $120 million
