4. Julian's Mother Dies...So He Gets Weird (Really Weird) - Only God Forgives

Only God Forgives Only God Forgives is, without question, the oddball movie of the year, packed with weird, surreal moments that David Lynch would have rejected as being "too obtuse". The pivotal sequence features police officer Chang murdering Julian's (Ryan Gosling) mother, Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas), with a samurai sword, and upon discovering her corpse, Julian longingly looks at it before moving toward her and placing his hands inside her gaping stomach wound. He eventually removes his hands from her womb, and aside from being an incredibly strange oedipal/Freudian reference, it's such an absurdly expressionistic way to deal with the death of your mother. It's not as explosive and steeped in as much consequence as most entries on this list, but damn...why would you mourn your mother that way?
