10 Biggest Movie Controversies Of 2021
5. Titane Rocks Cannes Film Festival
Titane, released earlier this year at Cannes Film Festival, is the second major film released by director Julia Ducournau. Ducournau made waves way back in 2016 following the release of her first film Raw, a body-horror nightmare about a young woman with a craving for human flesh.
Although Raw was relatively successful and generated some minor, yet ultimately impassive controversy, the film had absolutely nothing on Titane in terms of taboo and shock-value. The film is a little difficult to explain without using extremely explicit language, but let's put it this way; Titane is a story of a young woman who has a rather unhealthy, intimate relationship with automobiles.
Now, nobody is calling for Titane to be banned and human-rights groups aren't circling Julia Ducournau's house with angry signs and pitchforks, but the very subject matter of the film and the unflinching display of events therein generated heaps of buzz.
In fact, its premiere at Cannes was so widely discussed and dissected that Titane won the festival's highest award - the Palme d'Or. Explaining exactly why it won isn't possible in PG-13 language, so just do yourself a favour and watch it - if you think you can stomach it.
