10 Biggest Movie And TV News This Week (Aug 23)

1. David Yates Will Direct Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

David Yates A few months ago, Warner Brothers announced that Harry Potter author JK Rowling was prepping a spin-off film of the popular and successful film franchise, titled Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. This week we found out that Rowling isn't the only one returning to the world of Harry Potter, as TheWrap reports that David Yates will take the director's chair. Yates directed the last four films in the Potter series, Order of the Phoenix, The Half Blood Prince, and The Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2. Rowling is writing the screenplay for the film, which takes place 70 years before the events of Harry's famous adventures with his world-saving wizarding pals. The story focuses on fictitious author New Scamandar, who wrote the Hogwarts textbook from which the film takes its name, and his adventures that served as its basis. Before Yates landed the job, the studio looked at Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron, but he was too busy with other projects. Yates will be a great helmer for Fantastic Beasts, however, and can usher in a new era of the franchise while paying homage and respect to the films that came before.
