6. Boardwalk Empire Ending After Season 5

Despite a well-received fourth season and a consistently strong viewership, HBO and series creator Terence Winter have decided to bring their 1920's-set drama Boardwalk Empire to a close this fall with a fifth and final season. The bootlegging drama stars Steve Buscemi as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, a corrupt politician who controls Atlantic City during Prohibition and has 17 Emmys under its belt including Best Actor (Buscemi, 2011), best supporting actor (Bobby Cannavale, 2013) and best director (Martin Scorsese, 2011). Winter had this to say about the show's end: "We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of 'Boardwalk Empire. After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion." It will be sad to see the show go, but fans can at least take solace in the fact that Winter is ending the project on his own terms, and that the show isn't either overstaying its welcome or getting cancelled somewhere down the line.
