10 Biggest Problems Star Wars: Rogue One Faces (And How Lucasfilm Can Fix Them)
9. The Effects Of The Mission: Impossible Delay
The Problem: When Lucasfilm announced their first Star Wars spinoff as Rogue One in March 2015, they hit a bit of a roadblock almost immediately; this created a pretty serious clash with that summer's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. As Paramount had got their first, a deal was struck where Disney could keep the name, but were barred from promoting the movie until after Ethan Hunt's latest adventure had done the rounds.
As a result, the marketing push for Rogue One was delayed until less than a year before release, a major knock in the modern landscape.
How They Can Fix It: Whatever damage this may have wrought has already been done. For a long time Rogue One was excessively secretive, with barely any official word or footage after the title announcement, and while Lucasfilm's now patented restrained marketing practice would have no doubt led to this somewhat, the extended delay appears to be a side effect of the Rouge Nation clash.
This could have actually helped the film; Rogue One isn't as big an event as Episode VII, and to start building to it too early may have worked against it (and clash with that film's lengthy theatrical run). Regardless, what they need to do now is run a strong, targeted campaign that makes up for the lack of early coverage.
