10 Biggest Problems Star Wars: Rogue One Faces (And How Lucasfilm Can Fix Them)
8. The Reshoot Rumours
The Problem: By far the biggest knock to Rogue One hype came in early June with the reports of extensive reshoots. The exact why of it all varied depending on who you asked (it ranges from tricky cast-wrangling to major problems with the third act) but given these stories still keep coming (Tony Gilroy is reportedly overseeing the edit), there seems to be some veracity to the notion there's problems going on behind the scenes.
Reshoots aren't an inherently bad thing - most major studio movies have them factored in - but in the wake of Suicide Squad, which had similar high-profile alteration, it's certainly worrying. Was director Gareth Edwards not up to task? Have Lucasfilm changed their direction at the last minute? Is Rogue One facing a fate similar to its central superweapon.
How They Can Fix It: The odd thing here is that the reshoots are done almost explicitly to fix any problems. That's what they are by definition. Yes, they're a sign that something was wrong with the film, but the studio are wanting to fix it.
The question then is more if it came from genuine tonal or structural issues or a desire to make the film more inline with the massively successful The Force Awakens. And we'll have to wait until December to find that out. Until then, all Lucasfilm can do is keep diverting the chatter.
