2. Sly Gets The Shaft For Supporting Actor
Mark Rylance, long since written off as a contender for Best Supporting Actor - Bridge of Spies was seemingly nominated a bunch of times simply out of respect for Spielberg & Hanks - came out of nowhere to actually acquire the victory. It made sense for the BAFTAs, sure, when Rylance was on home turf, but the Oscars were another ballgame. Any one of the other contenders could have snuck in there (even Christian Bale's lazy-eyed turn in The Big Short) but most were expecting Sylvester Stallone to (rightfully) walk away with the award, considering his emotional, earned performance in Creed. That, or Mark Ruffalo, who completely disappears into his performance as Mike Rezendes in Spotlight. Evidently, the Academy still love an aging English thespian.
