10 Biggest Shocks From The Oscars 2016

1. Spotlight Goes Big, Goes Home With Best Picture Award

Who saw that coming!? Spotlight edged out The Revenant and Room for the big prize, in one of the biggest upsets at the Academy Awards since Crash beat Brokeback Mountain, Capote and Good Night, and Good Luck back in 2005. Who knows, this might be an apology to the journalists of the world after that latter film lost out eleven years ago. Most likely it's simply down to the film's quality ensemble cast, solid script and assured directing from Tom McCarthy, but whether it deserved to win over the other films in the category is sure to have rooms divided for a while yet. It's an important film with an important story to tell, and it's fantastic that it's now received this platform and accolade. Once again, the Academy looks to have spread the wealth a bit, as The Revenant takes home the Best Director and Best Actor special trophy combo, Room gets the Best Actress gong (aggressively well-deserved), leaving Spotlight to take the Best Picture award. Everybody gets honoured and everybody (well, almost everybody) goes home happy. Nonetheless, no one would have predicted it.
