7. What If Star Trek's Aliens Were More ... Alien?

If you go back through the years and take a look at Star Trek's many aliens, it doesn't take a genius to notice that they are almost all bipedal humanoids of the same size and shape as humans. No, it's not because humans played them with a limited budget!

There was an explanation given through the series that showed all sapient species were seeded throughout the galaxy by a single race. Consequently, they all evolved to somewhat look like one another with only their environments shaping them into what they ultimately became.

The explanation is far better than "We had a limited budget for creature effects," and it works well enough, but that doesn't satisfy all fans, so the question remains.

Less humanoid aliens would have required the series to be structured entirely differently. It would have introduced species greater and smaller in size to humans, which would have opened up the opportunity for all manner of humongous and tiny spaceship designs.

More alien creatures would have also changed the manner in which communication was conducted, so there might have been more "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" interactions between species.

Not all sentient species would appear as such to Starfleet officers, so there would be a need to update the Prime Directive. That would ensure Starfleet didn't wipe away an entire civilization of sentient mold spores when they clean the muck off their shoes. There are a plethora of different stories and options that open up with more alien creatures, so the sky's the limit.
