There are countless examples of superhero movies falling flat on their faces due to containing too many villains, with Spider-Man 3 being the most frequently-cited example.

So, you'd think that filmmakers who are also adapting comic-book properties would look at this evidence and take it in stride, focusing their stories on one great villain and one central hero, rather than thinly spreading their screen time on a conveyor belt of thinly-plotted threats.

Unfortunately, it looks like James Wan's forthcoming Aquaman movie will follow in Spider-Man 3's footsteps, and besides the villainous likes of King Nereus, Black Manta and Ocean Master, it's rumoured to feature comic-book baddies The Trench, taking the villain count to a staggering four.

Superhero News first discussed this possibility back in May, mentioning that Aquaman is rumoured to include bipedal humanoids with fins, arms, legs, big heads, big eyes, and very long, sharp teeth, creatures that sound a lot like The Trench, an ocean-dwelling race that were introduced in DC's New 52.

Of course, if The Trench are a part of Aquaman, it could just be for one quick action scene. In any event, four villains is a lot to juggle, and while The Trench are pretty cool, they might make the movie just a little too crowded.
