10 Biggest Video Game Movie Flops
6. Wing Commander
Budget: $30 million
US Box Office: $11,578,059
In the late 1990s, before video game adaptations found their feet with Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, Hollywood was still casting around for properties to turn into movies and settled on Wing Commander, Origin Systems’ space flight stimulator.
Was there ever going to be a decent movie wrung from this idea? Chris Roberts, who created the game, made his directorial debut with this adaptation so he must’ve thought so. Too bad he didn't have the budget to compete with the likes of The Matrix (released the same year) because the film's version of the future looks decidedly chintzy in comparison.
Imagine The Last Starfighter with Freddie Prinze and Matthew Lillard (Fred and Shaggy in the Scooby Doo movie) and you’ll have a fair idea of what’s in store.
What The Critics Said: “The effects are laughably primitive, the dialogue hilariously atrocious – and those are the good parts.” (Entertainment Weekly)
