6. Eighth Grade - The Banana

The directorial debut of stand-up comedian Bo Burnham, Eighth Grade is a wonderful film that pretty much perfectly captures the fear and anxiety of being in middle school. Rooted in the story of Kayla, a thirteen-year-old girl who struggles with making friends and figuring out her own identity, the film is a scarily accurate picture of what its like to not only be in eighth grade but to also be surrounded by social media and digital technology.

In one of the film's most exquisite sequences, Kayla is attempting to impress her crush, Aiden, by lying to him about her knowledge of oral sex. Subsequently, she returns home to use the internet in an attempt to teach herself how to give a blowjob. After she leaves her room, the camera follows her into the kitchen, where she opens the fridge.

And from here, the sequence is peak WTF suspense. Burnham's camera slowly moves across the countertop, settling on a banana just as Kayla turns to look at it. She walks over to the banana, slowly picks it up, only to be interrupted by her father, Mark.

He asks what she is doing with a banana, which she has never liked before, and she responds by forcing herself to eat a bite, only to spit it out and then throw the banana at Mike, screaming 'I hate bananas!'. It's a sequence that thrives off of cringe-inducing suspense and earns some truly WTF reactions.
