In the lead up to the film, there was much speculation over the actor playing Dr. Josef Klemperer.

Though the role was officially credited to Lutz Ebersdorf, rumors persisted that the role was, in fact, being played by Tilda Swinton in extensive make-up. Though Swinton and the entire cast kept this mostly under wraps until the film's premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Swinton eventually did confirm that she "plays the role of Lutz Ebersdorf playing Dr. Josef Klemperer". In other words, yes, Swinton plays Dr. Josef Klemperer.

But even knowing that going in doesn't come close to preparing viewers for what the film has in-store. Many were quick to assume that, seeing as Klemperer isn't even in Argento's original film, this character would have a small part to play. But nope, Klemperer winds up being one of the characters with the most screen-time in the entire film and central to the film's entire thematic thesis.

It is initially jarring to see Swinton in the role but like much else in the film, it kind of festers and grows on the viewer like an infection, until you're completely sold on it by the film's end.

Also, bonus WTF points to Swinton for insisting that she have a prosthetic penis between her legs whenever she was in make-up as Ebersdorf. Great stuff.
