10 Biggest WTF Moments In Suspiria
8. Jessica Harper's Cameo
In Dario Argento's original 1977 Suspiria, Jessica Harper played the lead role of the then-spelled Suzy Bannion. Seeing Harper show up in the new film at all would have been jarring enough, but Gudagnino apparently had much more in mind.
Early on in the film, it is established that Dr. Klemperer's wife went missing decades ago and that he was never able to find her. He ventures to their old farmhouse regularly for peace of mind. But just before the film's finale, Klemperer returns to the farmhouse to find his wife, Anke, waiting for him. This role is played by none other than Jessica Harper, herself.
In-narrative, this is a huge WTF moment in its own right. It feels like a curveball thrown out of nowhere. It initially feels like it has to be a dream or a delusion of some kind, but then the sequence goes on for so long and Anke offers up backstory to explain where she's been all this time and Guadagnino commits to it just long enough to make the audience think it may actually be true, just in time to pull the rug out from under them.
More interestingly though, this is a WTF moment on a meta-textual level as well. The protagonist of the original Suspiria shows as a literal false memory, weaponizing Dr. Klemperer's love of the past against him, much like this new Suspiria does to its own audience.
