6. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Though Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is an extremely underrated film, it's not surprising that its depiction of Indians caused quite a stir worldwide, with shooting in North India being denied after officials read the script and found it offensive. Particularly upsetting to Hindus was the depiction of their God, Kali, as a proponent of the evil underworld - with the worshippers ripping out hearts at whim - when Kali is in fact the God of energy, a change merely made for the purposes of the narrative. Similarly, the depiction of the Indians primarily as the savage "other", decked out in clothing Westerners will find menacing, enhances the stereotype, while their dining habits - such as eating beetles, monkey brains and small snakes - have absolutely no basis in fact. Add to this the constant use of (the admittedly adorable) Chinese scoundrel Short Round as comic relief - primarily milking his poor English - and you've got a film that annoys a lot of people, even if it is a wild ride all the same.
