10 Bleakest Endings In Horror Movies
8. 28 Weeks Later
Danny Boyle’s indie horror movie was a surprise smash hit in 2002 and it was no surprise that it was followed by a more Americanised sequel in 2007. Whilst the original mastered a very bleak tone for much of its run-time which has helped cement it as one of the best zombie(?) movies every made, it actually ends on a hopeful note: the infected starve to death as food runs out and the film ends with Jim and his fellow survivors flagging down a passing plane.
The sequel, whilst a slightly less impressive film overall, achieved a much bleaker ending than its predecessor. In this ending, we can hear a French accented voice calling for help over a radio and several of the infected running through a dark tunnel. When they finally emerge into the blinding daylight, we realise in horror that they are in Paris, having traversed the channel tunnel.
The film ends on the dour promise that the rage virus has breached continental Europe. Unfortunately, the proposed third film in the franchise; 28 Months Later, has yet to be made.
