10 Blockbuster Movies Way Too Desperate For A Sequel
4. The Losers
Most films that are vying for a sequel tend to cut out just before the conventional third act. The Losers goes one better, unashamedly the opening part of a much bigger story. Based on the fairly well-regarded comic book of the same name, The Losers is a film about a team of soldiers who are betrayed by their superiors and attempt to hunt down the man responsible. Looking like a generic team actioner and coming mere months before The A-Team, the movie was already an unappetising prospect for audiences. Those few who did check it out were greeted with a confused attempt to kick start a franchise with a barely functioning narrative. The crux of The Losers is the team's hunt for Max, a mysterious super-villain who tried to kill them. So naturally you'd expect a film to build towards a big confrontation. And while that's what it shapes itself up to be for the first third, it soon begins to meander until a visually vapid, generically structured finale sees the villain escape like the end of a kids cartoon. That sort of play may work in an ongoing comic book, but on the big screen it just won't fly. Did it work? Thankfully the film is now all but forgotten. Although stars Chris Evans and Zoe Saldana have both gone onto big success with much better hero teams.
