10 Blockbuster Movies Way Too Desperate For A Sequel
3. Battle: Los Angeles
You may question why a forgettable film from 2011 places so high on this list. It's because everything about Battle: Los Angeles, from conception right up until release, was crafted to build towards a sequel. Coming with that obnoxious colon (a sure-fire way to make the naming of later instalments easier), Battle: LA takes the visual style of a sub-Gears Of War action game, shoots it with a shakey-cam and throws it out to cinemas. And don't even think about any plot development. This one's all about the set up; the state of events between Aaron Eckhart's Sgt. Nantz first getting called up for duty and when he returns from his ordeal is pretty much the same. It's clear everything Nantz's team does has little effect on the bigger alien invasion at hand. As the film ends, with Nantz heroically goes back into the fray, it becomes readily apparent the scope of the potential franchise is global (it was released in some territories as World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles). Cue facepalms; looks like we'll have to sit through another film that, with its boss fights and weak-spots, feels like a glorified Let's Play video. Did it work? Although the film did better than it deserved to do at the box office, word on a sequel is quiet. Phew.
