10 Blockbusters From 2016 That Should Win Oscars (But Won't)
7. The BFG (Best Supporting Actor - Mark Rylance)
Why It Should Win: Mark Rylance is the beating heart and soul of Steven Spielberg's charming Roald Dahl adaptation, bringing the beloved title character to life with the help of some terrific performance capture technology.
Rylance well and truly rises to the challenge of transporting a novel icon to the big screen with wit, charm and a ton of wonder. Exactly what the movie needed, then.
Why It Won't: For starters, The BFG was a box office bust which always puts a film in bad standing with the Academy. Then there's the fact that CGI-assisted performances are highly controversial and have seen Andy Serkis snubbed on at least three occasions for Oscar-worthy roles in the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchises.
And finally, Rylance won the very same Oscar last year for his work on Bridge of Spies, so the Academy will almost certainly want to reward somebody else, and Liam Neeson is much more likely to take the win for his heavily-hyped work in Silence.
