6. Insidious 3

Taking inspiration from Paranormal Activity 3, Insidious 3 goes the prequel route and fills in the blanks for the audience. Like prequels since time immemorial, it needn’t have bothered.

The true measure of a movie’s worth is how well it stands up on its own merits when set apart from its predecessors, and Insidious 3 wouldn’t even cut it as a second-rate Masters Of Horror episode. The drama is a perfunctory pretext to jump scares and it’s difficult to care about blah characters and their blah problems, particularly when they’re more like pieces on a chess board rather than real people.

The film’s most entertaining aspect came from God-fearing critics who took issue with the the concept of “astro-physiology”, where one travels to the afterlife after leaving one’s own body. “Make no mistake,” wrote one viewer, “the Bible is clear that anyone who even attempts to call upon the dead or consult the afterlife is an abomination.”
