10 Blumhouse Productions That Prove The New Halloween Movie Is Doomed

5. Sinister 2

If ever a movie deserved to be left alone it’s Scott Derrickson’s Sinister, a fine (and dandy) ghost story that benefitted from a compelling central performance by Ethan Hawke. The law of diminishing returns dictates that this sequel won’t be as effective, but did it have to be so trite?

Whereas the original’s lead character was a washed-up true crime writer, here the filmmakers resort to caricature and give us a custody battling young mom who’ll do anything to protect her 2 young sons. They even stoop to bringing back the Deputy from the first film, who has apparently gone off the deep end, spending time in confessional in between attempting to torch demonic houses.

There’s no atmosphere in this sequel, the shocks are few and far between and when it comes to the final “jolt” you could be forgiven for wondering if you’ve just watched an 80s Elm Street sequel. The critics were equally unimpressed, with Variety calling the film “a retread of such brainless, shameless lameness that it’s hard to imagine anyone begging for another instalment.”
