Budget: $180 million Box office: $757.8 million Angelina Jolie might have been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently, with the Sony email leaks revealing a particular dislike for the huge star from the bosses over at Sony, but the box office success of Malificent is hardly going to damage her bankability any time soon. Malificent, a retelling of the story of Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of the misunderstood villain, sounded on paper like a potentially dreadful idea - the result was an incoherent visual spectacle which seemed as if it couldn't decide what kind of movie it wanted to be. The CGI overload, muddled narrative and generally messy tone merge together into a film which appears to have been made by committee. Still, the quasi-feminist revision of the classic fairy tale obviously appealed to plenty of cinema-goers and Malificent settled into the top ten grossing movies of the year.
