10 Box Office Hits From 2014 Which Should Have Bombed

6. Tammy

Budget: $20 million Box office: $100 million Given that Melissa McCarthy was joined by an excellent cast including Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates and Dan Aykroyd and the producers included Adam McKay and Will Ferrell there was every reason to believe that Tammy would be a great comedy full of plenty of laughs. That it fell well short of its potential certainly didn't stop people from going to see it, and despite the best intentions of those involved Tammy turned out to be something of a misfire. It seems as if McCarthy is yet to find the right movie which makes the most of her talent - notwithstanding her understated performance in this year's St. Vincent, in which she appeared alongside Bill Murray - and Tammy is an erratic movie which delivers little in the laughs department. Since 2011 McCarthy's movies have been poorly received by the critics - mostly for good reason - but her box office receipts tell a different story. As long as the sub-standard comedies perform this well plenty more are likely to be on the way.
