10 Box Office Hits From 2014 Which Should Have Bombed

4. Ride Along

Budget: $25 million Box office: $153.3 million As Let's Be Cops has proven, if there's one comedy sub-genre that refuses to go away but really should it's the buddy cop genre, and Hollywood was happy to give us not just one but two more unfortunate additions, the second one being Ride Along, starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. A rambling and nonsensical plot isn't too much of an issue when you're dealing with comedies, but a lazy approach to the jokes certainly is, and Ride Along suffers from the same problem as Let's Be Cops - for a comedy it really isn't at all funny. Most of the gags are based on cop movie clichés which have been sent up a thousand times before (and often far better) and while Kevin Hart should be credited for his energetic performance it isn't enough to save the film from the poor material at its core. None of which seemed to be much of a problem for the many people who went to see it - its success at the box office has already guaranteed more of the same, with a sequel planned for release in 2016.
