10 Box Office Hits You Forgot Even Existed
1. Maleficent
Maleficent took the bold step of telling the story from the perspective of the antagonist (who just happened to be played by A-lister Angelina Jolie), was the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2014 after earning $758.5m at the box office and kick-started the studio's obsession of remaking their back catalogue of animated classics, a practice that has generated billions in revenue for the House That Walt Built.
However, Robert Stromberg's directorial debut will only be remembered as a footnote in Disney history despite being a huge financial success and kicking down the door for the likes of Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast. Part of that is down to how bland the movie is, with Jolie's magnetically charismatic performance papering over the huge cracks in the narrative department.
People talk about the stunning visuals in Jon Favreau's Jungle Book, the eye-catching production design of Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella and the energy of Beauty and the Beast's charming cast, but nobody ever says a thing about Maleficent.
