It's fair to say that most people remember Batman V Superman as an overly serious, over-stuffed, failed attempt at kickstarting a movie universe. However, once you get past the many flaws and let downs the Zack Snyder feature offers up, you'll find a few rather interesting details which unexpectedly connect the story to another well-known fantasy epic - Excalibur.

Setting up its influence on the upcoming divisive flick from the off, Bruce Wayne and his soon-to-be murdered parents are spotted walking out of a cinema which is showing the 1981 classic in the opening credits.

During BVS we also witness Batman and Superman coming to blows and eventually fighting side by side, mirroring the collision of two forces of good that goes down in Excalibur when King Arthur and Sir Lancelot lock horns before joining forces to battle against evil in the end.

However, the biggest callback to the John Boorman film comes in the form of Superman's sacrifice during the climactic Doomsday battle. In giving up his own life to ultimately destroy the true enemy, Supes' death feels remarkably similar to the moment Arthur allows himself to be impaled by Mordred's spear so he can drive Excalibur into his foe.

BVS may not be as adored as the medieval epic, but these interesting little nods to Excalibur are some of the only elements which help keep the film from being classed as a complete and utter failure...which is something, I guess.
